Unveiling the “emerald gem” that’s got travelers buzzing!

12 March 2025 | 09:08:00 AM

Cat Ba (Hai Phong) is becoming a travel sensation, not for its luxury, but for its rare sense of wilderness and freedom, attracting adventurers from around the world.

The untamed beauty of Cat Ba

The “hidden gem” in high demand

Simon Walker, a British photographer who has traveled across Southeast Asia from Bali to Palawan, found something entirely different when he arrived in Cat Ba. Here, nature and humanity still exist in their purest harmony.

Simon’s journey to Cat Ba began with a world-record-holding cable car ride across the sea. From above, he marveled at the towering limestone mountains rising from the deep blue bay, while scattered fishing villages glowed under the afternoon sun. As the cabin reached the station, he immediately sensed the difference - no honking, no pollution - just fresh air and the rhythmic waves. The island retains its untouched charm and an enticing sense of seclusion.

A short trip beyond the town center led him through ancient forests, kayaking across Lan Ha Bay, or relaxing on pristine beaches. In Cat Ba, nature is not just a backdrop but an immersive experience. It’s no surprise that international visitors increasingly choose this island - it offers an isolated paradise waiting to be explored.

Nearly 180,000 international visitors in the first two months of 2025

From January to February 2025, Cat Ba (Hai Phong) welcomed over 280,000 tourists, with nearly 180,000 being international visitors. Tourism services generated an estimated revenue of VND 257 billion. Leading global travel platforms highlight a shift in international travelers’ perception of Cat Ba.

On Agoda, Cat Ba ranks among the most searched destinations in Vietnam in early 2025. Meanwhile, Tripadvisor consistently features glowing reviews from foreign travelers who praise the unspoiled beauty of Lan Ha Bay, the biodiversity of Cat Ba National Park, and its peaceful atmosphere. Even Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio once enthusiastically shared a video on Instagram, describing Lan Ha Bay as “paradise”.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Paradise”

Thrillist, a renowned U.S. travel and lifestyle website, once published an article titled “The One Place You Should Visit in Every Southeast Asian Country.” Travel journalist Matt Meltzer selected Lan Ha Bay in Cat Ba as Vietnam’s must-visit destination.

A rising symbol of sustainable tourism

Previously, Cat Ba was a “hidden gem"” known only to nature lovers and adventure seekers. Today, it is evolving into a symbol of sustainable tourism, balancing conservation with development.

Lan Ha Bay

The biggest milestone is UNESCO’s recognition of Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago as a World Natural Heritage Site, solidifying its status not just in the region but on the global map. Cat Ba is no longer just a beautiful destination; it has become a symbol of the perfect balance between nature and humanity.

However, with rising popularity comes a major challenge: the island’s accommodation and tourism services have yet to fully keep pace with the growing number of international visitors. Amid this landscape, Xanh Island Bay City - the first project developed by Sun Group in Cat Ba, emerges as a pioneering highlight - a place where modernity and nature blend in perfect harmony. Starting from May 15, 2025, this area will officially launch an unprecedented world-class culinary and entertainment experience in Cat Ba.

“Symphony of Green Island” debuts on May 15

The crown jewel of nighttime entertainment will be “Symphony of Green Island”- the world’s largest fireworks jet ski show, with a total investment of nearly VND 200 billion. This spectacle is brought to life by LaserVision (Australia) and H2O, world-leading experts in water-based performances.

Adding to the excitement, VUI-Fest Night Market-a sustainable marketplace with 36 eco-friendly stalls-will transform the island’s center into a vibrant festival. Here, visitors can enjoy exquisite cuisine, lively street performances, and cultural experiences. Sun Bavaria Cat Ba Gastro Pub offers all-day dining with authentic German craft beer-Sun KraftBeer-along with a prime viewing spot for the fireworks. By day, visitors can escape the festivities and unwind at the nearly 1 km-long pristine Cac Ba Beach, the island’s largest.

Beyond entertainment, Xanh Island Bay City pioneers a sustainable lifestyle with a zero-emission internal transport system, featuring electric buses, buggies, charging stations, and well-planned parking areas. This ensures seamless mobility for visitors while preserving the island’s delicate ecosystem. With Xanh Island’s arrival, Cat Ba is transforming from a hidden gem into a world-class destination, where luxury tourism and sustainability seamlessly blend into a perfect whole.

If there’s an ideal time to experience Cat Ba before it explodes onto the world tourism map - it’s now.
