Bindweed menaces Son Tra nature reserves

17 September 2012 | 08:17:00 PM

VietNamNet Bridge – Son Tra nature reserves are exposed to high risks of being occupied by bindweed as shown in photos of Son Tra Peninsula taken by Landsat satellite of the United States Nature Museum on July 11, said Danang City’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to Nguyen Huu Tam, specialist of the Technical Management Division under the agriculture department, thanks to the satellite photos, his department has identified locations in the nature reserves being invaded by the creeper.

“The overwhelming presence of bindweed around Son Tra Peninsula in particular and in Danang in general is considered serious threats to the biological diversity at specialized forests in the city,” Tam stressed.

“As the total area occupied by bindweed is rather large, it is impossible to remove the whole area at the same time but it is able to single out certain locations to be removed first,” he noted.

Danang has since 2005 removed a combined 870 hectares of bindweed in Son Tra nature reserves and Nam Hai Van landscape protection area. The city exterminated bindweed on 33 hectares in 2005, 50 hectares in 2006, 40 hectares in 2008, 70 hectares in 2009, 178 hectares in 2010 and up to 500 hectares in 2011.

However, the progress to eliminate bindweed in the locality is yet to be carried out in a consistent and drastic way due to lacking capital.
