(VACNE) – Amid the growing severity of climate change, the book The New Global Possible: Rebuilding Optimism in the Age of Climate Crisis, published by the World Resources Institute (WRI), presents clear evidence that practical solutions are already working and can be scaled up worldwide.

History has shown that even during crises, collective action can lead to significant breakthroughs. The 2015 Paris Agreement at COP21 is a prime example: nearly all nations came together to commit to reducing the impacts of climate change. This event demonstrated that meaningful progress is not accidental but the result of cooperation, diplomatic effort, and bold decision-making.
Continuing this spirit, Ani Dasgupta—President and CEO of WRI—highlights in his upcoming book, to be released on September 9, 2025, five notable solutions already making a difference across various regions:
1. Technology: Using Satellites to Protect Forests
In the Amazon, Indigenous communities employ satellite mapping to detect illegal logging in real time. This geospatial data enables them to alert authorities and protect their land and livelihoods. Technology here serves not exploitation but preservation.
2. Business: IKEA’s Sustainable Transformation
Aiming for carbon neutrality, IKEA expanded into the secondhand market, began reclaiming used products, and redesigned its supply chains. As a result, emissions have dropped, profits have risen, and the company has proven that sustainable business is smart business.
3. Justice: Ending Urban Oil Drilling in Los Angeles
In South Los Angeles, urban oil drilling once polluted the air, causing headaches, asthma, and nosebleeds among residents. Through persistent advocacy by community coalitions, the city decided to phase out this practice, marking a victory for environmental justice.
4. Cities: Reclaiming Streets for People
Every Sunday in Bogotá, Colombia, more than 100 kilometers of streets transform into “Ciclovía,” a car-free festival where residents cycle, walk, and enjoy community activities. Similar initiatives have been adopted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Delhi, India.
5. Economy: Indonesia’s Green Growth Pathway
Indonesia, once facing significant environmental degradation, partnered with global experts in 2017 to design a low-carbon development plan. This strategy not only boosts GDP and cuts poverty in half but also saves lives. It shows that climate action and economic growth can go hand in hand.
According to WRI, these initiatives are not only addressing immediate problems but also providing scalable models for other countries. The New Global Possible gathers over 100 inspiring stories from individuals and communities worldwide—people turning crisis into an opportunity for positive change.
