A video went viral on July 14 showing black wastewater gushing onto Nhon Ly Beach, flooding areas where locals offer tourism services and harming the beach’s cleanliness.

Right after the incident, local authorities instructed concerned units to handle the situation and seek long-term measures and solutions promptly, Quang added.

The Quy Nhon Dong Ward People’s Committee reported that the wastewater spill started at a discharge outlet in Ly Hoa Hamlet, part of a coastal road upgrading project in Ly Chanh and Ly Hoa Hamlets, previously managed by the city’s Department of Economic and Urban Infrastructure.

The project began on January 5 last year and was scheduled for completion by June 30. Although largely finished, it has yet to be handed over to Quy Nhon Dong Ward authorities or a management unit for operation.

During construction, the outlet of the drainage pipe was blocked by sand pushed in by high tides, resulting in wastewater stagnation for an extended period.

While clearing the drainage outlet for inspection and handover on July 14, the construction unit failed to create a proper flow channel, resulting in a large volume of stagnant wastewater overflowing and spilling into the sea.

To prevent further wastewater spills, Quy Nhon Dong Ward has requested that the Departments of Agriculture, Environment, and Construction conduct a survey and support the implementation of suitable wastewater treatment solutions for households in Ly Hoa and Ly Chanh hamlets.
