Rare species caught on camera in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

13 August 2025 | 06:45:00 AM

Camera traps have recorded numerous species listed in the Red Data Book within Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in the central province of Quang Tri, according to the park’s management board.

Analysis of 186,183 images from 120 camera-trap stations put at Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park identified 64 species, including birds, primates, ungulates, civets, weasels, and other mammals such as the Annamite striped rabbit, wildcat, pangolin, and Laotian rock rat. Of these, 38 are listed in the Red Data Book as endangered, precious, or rare and in need of protection.

From now until the end of this year, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is scheduled for another camera-trap collection, with images and data to be analysed to identify additional rare species and assess their living conditions.

Images of rare wildlife in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park underscore its exceptional biodiversity, demonstrate effective conservation and monitoring, and have raised public awareness of the importance of protecting nature.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park World Natural Heritage site spans 123,326 hectares, comprising a strictly protected zone (100,296 ha), an ecological restoration zone (19,619 ha), and an administrative and service zone (3,411 ha).

The park is also home to 2,954 plant species and 1,399 animal species, including over 200 listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List.
