VND 3 trillion upgrade for congested HCM City street and bridge

27 October 2025 | 06:33:00 AM

The HCM City Department of Construction has recommended an investment of VND 2.95 trillion (USD 118 million) to widen Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and build a new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge.

Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, a key route linking the city centre with southern areas, is frequently congested. The 1.9-km road plays an essential role in connecting port areas with the city centre.

Tan Thuan 1 Bridge, built in 1905, is 241 metres long with two traffic lanes and has been in operation for about 120 years, exceeding its design lifespan. The department has therefore proposed constructing a new bridge and widening the entire 2.5-km stretch from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge.

The project would expand the road to six to eight lanes and include an underpass with at least four lanes at the Hoang Dieu intersection.

The department has asked the people’s committee to assign the Department of Finance to arrange investment capital and to have the Transportation Construction Project Management Board begin preparatory work this month.

The Department of Planning and Architecture has been assigned to review and launch a design competition for the west bank of the Saigon River, spanning from Ba Son Bridge to the Vietnam International Container Terminal, featuring multifunctional public parks and inland passenger ports.

Under HCM City’s 2021-2030 master plan, the riverside route overlapping Nguyen Tat Thanh Street will form a new north-south traffic axis to ease congestion on existing corridors.

The plan also includes the six-lane Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, linking the new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge with Metro Line 7 from Thu Thiem Station to the city’s southern area.

A tramway along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is also being considered as part of an integrated transport and urban landscape plan for the western bank of the Saigon River, envisioned as a modern, cohesive riverside development corridor.
