Vinacomin supports electricity project on Co To Island

24 October 2011 | 02:12:00 PM

The Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) has committed to support 50% of the VND 300 billion (US$ 14.4 million) investment capital required for an electrical cable project on Co To Island.

This project is under a co-operation agreement between Vinacomin and the Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee.
The two sides agreed to establish an electrical cable system connecting the island to the national electricity grid on the mainland instead of a proposed thermal electricity plant, which was too costly (about VND 600 billion) and would have negative impacts on the environment.
The electrical cables will help Co To Island connect to the national power grid and ensure an adequate power supply for production and daily life.
Co To Island is currently not connected to the national grid and local people must use generators to produce electricity.
