Tunnel to be built under Danang airport

29 August 2025 | 08:35:00 AM

The central city of Danang has initiated an airport tunnel project, starting with bidding for a consulting contract to prepare the pre-feasibility study.

On August 28, Danang’s Management Board for Transport and Agricultural Investment Projects announced the opening of bids for a consulting contract to prepare the pre-feasibility study of a proposed tunnel beneath Danang International Airport.

The package is valued at more than VND 3.8 billion (USD 150,000) and will be carried out under an all-inclusive contract within 118 days.

According to a preliminary plan submitted by the Department of Construction, the tunnel would be more than 2.9 kilometres long, including two open-cut sections of 570 metres, three box-tunnel sections totalling 1,450 metres, and a 900-metre stretch running beneath the runway.

Two options have been proposed for the project. The first would combine a metro line with a road tunnel, which will cost a total investment of around VND 10 trillion (USD 420 million). The second building, a separate metro line independent of the road tunnel, would cost approximately VND 7.5 trillion.

However, the Danang Department of Construction deemed that the first option unfeasible due to major differences in technical standards between metro and road systems and the unclear metro investment timeline. The separate option is considered more flexible and better aligned with current technological trends.

Under Danang’s urban transport plan for 2030 with a vision to 2045, the proposed tunnel under the airport will serve as an east-west connector to ease traffic on the city’s Dien Bien Phu and Cach Mang Thang Tam roads.
