(VACNE) - It is a nearly 700-year-old tree (scientific name is Manilkara hexandra) standing in the middle of the field of Tra Tay village, Tam My Dong commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province, which has just been solemnly held by the local community to welcome the Certificate of Recognition of Vietnamese Heritage Trees on the morning of April 6, 2025.
Attending the ceremony and sharing with the community about this event, there were scientists, religious dignitaries, writers and artists, leaders and representatives of VACNE, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province, the People's Committee of Nui Thanh district, Tam My Dong commune, and a large number of people in the region. A number of central and local media agencies in the Central region also came to report on this event.

All the people in the area were asked, saying: they also don't know what this tree is and when it has existed? They only know that the tree stands on the edge of a mound floating in the middle of the field, so from ancient times to now, people still call it the Dau Ganh tree. Until now, we have only learned that the real name is Giuang Neo, although the "old tree" has been attached to the people of Tra Tay village for many generations. The stumps and shades, which are the resting places of local farmers during the cultivation process, are also a playground for generations of children of the village. At the same time, this place has a temple of the native god, so it has become a spiritual place of the village. During the resistance war against French colonialism and American imperialism, this ancient tree was also a meeting point, a secret mailbox for revolutionary soldiers operating in the region.
Prof. Dr. Dang Huy Huynh, ASEAN Biodiversity Hero, Vice President of VACNE expressed his surprise at the response of a large number of people to the event and the behavior of villagers with this ancient tree. Affirming that the Gang Neo tree has been closely associated with the spiritual life, cultural life and traditions of the Tam My Dong - Nui Thanh people. The professor hopes that local people will continue to preserve and protect the Heritage Tree so that this place is not only a historical symbol but also a tourist attraction of Quang Nam province.
