September 9: No-nylon bag day in Hoi An

01 September 2009 | 10:12:00 AM

(VietNamNet Bridge) – The ancient city of Hoi An, a world cultural heritage, will organise the Day without Nylon Bags – Nature Day on September 9, 2009.

On this day, the city encourages visitors and locals to not use nylon bags. Volunteers will also travel around the city to collect waste nylon bags and deliver 20,000 paper bags to local families.

Stores that don’t use nylon bags will be inaugurated in the city.

In March 2009, the HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment asked the local government to implement a programme to restrict the use of nylon bags in the city.

It is estimated that Vietnamese people use 328 nylon bags/person/year, while the figures are 250 in Australia and 153 in Scotland.
