25 March 2013 | 04:47:00 PM

The fourth Regional 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) Forum in Asia closed in Hanoi on March 20 with the adoption of the Hanoi 3R Declaration – Sustainable 3R Goals for Asia for 2013-2023.

During the three-day event, themed “3Rs in the Context of Rio+20 Outcome - The Future We Want”, representatives from 31 nations focused their discussions on a series of issues to promote 3R measures for the sustainable development in Asia-Pacific.

They discussed resource efficiency measures to achieve Rio +20 outcomes; new and emerging waste issues in terms of policy, institutional and technological considerations; and 3R infrastructure towards a resource efficient and zero waste society.

3R performance indicators and resource efficiency; 3Rs in small-and medium-sized enterprises, industrial, agricultural and rural sectors; 3Rs for sustainable and resilient cities, and multi-stakeholder partnerships to advance to the 3Rs and resource efficiency were also tabled during the forum.

In his closing speech, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang said that the outcomes of the forum will create a firm foundation and opportunities for Asia to obtain its goal of a greener economy.

The success of 3R measures depends on not only efforts by countries but also cooperation and experience sharing among them, he said.

Over the last four years, 127 concerned parties have reduced nylon waste by 7,100 tonnes, saving 15 million USD. Under Vietnam’s 2025 targets, all urban areas will have solid waste recycling works, and all urban daily and industrial solid waste, 90 percent of construction waste and household waste will be collected and treated.
