ABSTRACT
Green House Gases (GHGs) are air pollutants, identified as key factor contributing in climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) origintated from burning fossil fuels (industrial, transport and domestic sources…) and from vegetation fire is the main component of GHGs. As estimated, the transport sector contributed 23% of the total CO2 in the World. Transport - related CO2 emission from developing countries will contribute in increasing proportion to global CO2 emission unless mitigating measures are implemented. To minimize CO2 emission, various international organization have set up requirement to predict the total CO2 emmited by road transport projects in EIA study.
To follow the Asian Development Bank (ADB)’ guideline the authors of this paper have quantitatively predicted CO2 emission at each section of 8 sections along the projected Benluc - Longthanh Expressway, lasting from Longan to Dongnai province in the Southern Vietnam . The calculation method is based the input data, included the predicted volume of vehicles (in PCU) at each section at each target year; CO2 emission coeficient and a formula suggested in the international literature. The obtained results show that the total CO2 emission generated by traffic activities on the Benluc – Longthanh Expressway in 2036 will be 1,462.86 ton/day or 533,945 ton/year. With the high CO2 emission these expressway project should be regularly monitored in GHG emission during the road operation phase.
This paper includes 6 pages, 2 tables, 2 figures and 5 references.
