Kon Tum villagers fear effect of power project on tourist village

Authorities in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum have been instructed to seek the opinion of local residents on the implementation of one hydropower project near Kon Ko Tu tourist village.



According to the Kon Tum Department of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Industry and Trade had previously approved five small-scale hydropower projects in the province. Among those, the 84-hectare Dak Bla 3 hydropower plant, which has a total investment of VND300 billion (USD12.93 million), would be built Dak Bla River running through Kon To Tu tourist village.

The plant with a capacity of 8.6MW is expected to be put into operation in the fourth quarter of this year.

However, many residents have raised their concerns about the project, saying that it would have negative impacts on their lives as well as the village’s tourism development.

Kon Tum People’s Committee in response has urged the departments of natural resources and environment; culture, sports and tourism and other concerned agencies to seek local people’s opinions on the project.
