Farms keep pace with progress

19 September 2011 | 10:06:00 AM

A comprehensive plan is essential for the development of agriculture and rural areas, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong told officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at a meeting here yesterday.

Ethnic minorities in Mu Cang Chai district (Yen Bai) have benefited from Government technical support in rice farming

"The movement of new rural development has spread nationwide," Trong said.
The meeting was held to review the implementation of Party Central Committee Resolution No 26/NQ/TW issued in 2008, and Trong noted that a great deal of progress had been achieved since that time.
"Though the country's population keeps increasing and the amount of land under cultivation keeps declining, we are still able to ensure food safety and higher volumes of rice exports year by year," said Trong. "Farmers are very happy because they have had bumper crops and the price of rice keeps rising. Their living conditions have much been improved, both physically and spiritually."
Although agriculture had fallen as a proportion of gross domestic product (GDP), the value of agricultural production has continued to increase, and agriculture has become a firm foundation for the nation's sustainable economic development on the path towards industrialisation and modernisation.
Yet Trong stressed the importance of bringing the contents of the resolution into fruition.
"It's imperative that authorities and Party committees at all levels come up with specific programmes and practical plans of action with full support from and innovations by farmers," he said.
