Farmers attended the Seminar on climate change adaptation

On 12.11.2013, the Viet Nam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE) in collaboration with the Stockholm International Water Institute, Sweden (SIWI) performanced a Seminar on awareness raising about response to climate change for rural communities in coastal areas

Over 40 participants, including farmers, the commune officials,  women Union, Youth Union, veterans of Thai Ha commune attended the Seminar.

Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Van Viet, Assoc. Dr. Dang Tung Hoa (VACNE), Dr. Jenny (SIWI) has presented the underlying problem of climate change, sea level rise, saltwater intrusion, the fluctuations of weather and climate in the Thai Binh Provice, the Red River Delta and Vietnam, the preventive measures to cope with the harmful effects of climate change on agricultural production and livelihoods of coastal communities.

Farmers have listened very attentively to presentations of the  VACNE and SIWI  experts and join a lively discussion, raises many questions for the experts to answer. They also highlighted the many petitions to the authorities of the commune, district, province and state to support and facilitate the local people to resolve the difficulties in production and life, such as upgrading the irrigation and drainage system,  application of new varieties that are  better resistant to pests and diseases, support  migration of coastal communities, building yard for waste collection and treatment, ....

Before the opening the seminar, the VACNE Office has shown  a video clip on field surveys, discussions, interviews farmers in Thai Ha commune on the impact of climate change performanced by SIWI and VACNE  in 6/2013. See Video Clip  here.
