Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Sinh, President of VACNE: Biodiversity protection and sustainable forest development should rely on strength of the community

25 May 2011 | 08:48:00 PM

VACNE - This is opinion of Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Sinh, President of Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE) on May 20 at an interview from Television News Agency about this topic.

According to Dr. Sinh, although in recent years Vietnam has taken a lot of efforts in biodiversity conservation and forest protection, it has not gained high efficiency yet.

The main cause is that Vietnam has not still completely appreciated the role, potential and strength of the community. Therefore, VACNE intends to coordinate with research units, management agencies and international organizations to enhance this power.
In spite of modest results, over the last time, VACNE has continuously organized many activities contributing to raising awareness of the community on forest development and protection; on biodiversity conservation in Vietnam, namely scientific workshops on biodiversity in the Truong Son Mountain Chain and the event of Heritage Tree Conservation.
The event about honoring Vietnam Heritage Trees initiated by VACNE with the aim to preserve ancient trees and rare indigenous genetic resources has been positively responded by local authorities and people nationwide because it reflects the existing tradition of the community and meets people’s aspirations.
