Dong Nai’s farmers accept Vedan’s compensation

30 May 2010 | 09:41:00 PM

(VietNamNet Bridge)-While HCM City and Ba Ria-Vung Tau are struggling to get appropriate compensation for their farmers, victims of Taiwanese seasoning powder producer Vedan’s polluting activities, Dong Nai has accepted 15 billion dong of compensation.

The Dong Nai Provincial Farmer Association on May 27 announced to agree with Vedan’s proposal of raising compensation from 7 to 15 billion dong for farmers in four communes of Phuoc An, Long Tho, Phuoc Thai and Long Phuoc, who suffered losses caused by the firm’s polluting activities to the Thi Vai river.

Local farmers said that they have temporarily accepted the compensation. If Vedan pays higher compensation for farmers in HCM City and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, they will demand the same.

Once Vedan pays compensation, Dong Nai’s farmers will not bring the case to the court.

Meanwhile, Ba Ria-Vung Tau insisted to claim 53.5 billion dong of compensation from Vedan. The polluting company will have its official feedback for the claim on May 30.
