Community Coastal Cleanup in Xuan Tu (Khanh Hoa) |
From cigarette butts, to plastic bags and empty drink bottles — household waste and throw-away rubbish are increasingly found on Vietnam’s beaches and oceans. They’re poisoning the marine environment and ruining the natural beauty of the country at a rapid rate.
In Vietnam, the international coastal cleanup (ICC) was first organized on 23 September 2000 by Marinelife Alliance International (IMA-VN), the predecessor of the Center for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development - MCD (VACNE Member), initiated in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa. Clean-up activities helped raise the awareness of the many threats of coastal waste, identified waste characteristics, and initiated community response to reducing waste generation.Over 6000 participants in 18 sites from six provinces have been involved in these activities.
With social responsibility and community spirit, more than 300 volunteers from the Intel Products Vietnam (IPV), adidas Vietnam and the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham) participate in the collecting trash and coastal clean-up activity in Vung Tau City in order to respond the International Coastal Clean-up Day.
"MCD is happy to see more and more business sector actively participate in activities for environmental protection. The companies together join the coastal cleanup in Vung Tau city to show the commitment, responsibility and great sharing through action to society" - Ms. Nguyen Thu Hue, MCD Director said.
"As a representative of a company operating in the field of information technology, we always aim to protect environmental resources in the process from design to production. Participate in programs to clean the beach this time, we wish to raise awareness for community in preventing the action as environmental pollution, keeping coastal and marine environment clean. The presence of Intel members in particular and people in general today expressed consensus of the community in the communication for protection of marine environment". Mr. Rick Howarth, General Director of Intel Products Vietnam.
“Participating in coastal clean-up activities, I realized that there are many types of waste, among them, many waste from human activities float to the beach. For this reason, through this program, I hope that community will be more responsible to marine environment, and reduce litter out naturally”- Ms. Tran Thi Hong Chau, Social Area Environmental Affairs Manager in Vietnam, adidas representative spoke.
