Cao Bang Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment and Hien River Water Resources Protection

05 January 2012 | 03:08:00 PM

On December 21, 2011, in Cao Bang Province, a workshop on "Current situation and measures for the Hien River water resources protection" was held by the Cao Bang Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment in cooperation with the Cao Bang Union of Scientific and Technological Associations.

For many years, Hien River water, the main providing source of drinking water for all people in Cao Bang town, has been seriously polluted by gold mining in the upper area of the river. Many policies and measures at provincial as well as local levels has been promulgated to reduce pollution of this drinking and domestic water resource. However, the desired results have not been achieved, the quality of Hien River water has been worsening, concentrations of pollutants in the river are very high.

At the workshop, 9 presentations were delivered by the local authors who have been being directly involved in management of, use of, and communication to protect Hien River water resources. The presentations showed data pointing out serious situation of Hien River water pollution which was being more and more critical and put forward a warning: if the gold mining in the upper area of the Hien river aren't be stopped in time, the Hien River will become the "dead river".

The Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment has sent 2 experts to the workshop. Their presentations which include a proposal on urgent measures to protect Hien River water were highly appreciated by all workshop's participants.
