Bad waste management puts Vietnam recycler under shutdown threat

19 September 2011 | 10:17:00 AM

Environmental authorities from the southern province of Dong Nai have asked the Prime Minister to shut down a local recycler due to waste management violations.

Workers arrange waste at the Tan Phat Tai recycling company in Dong Nai.

Tan Phat Tai Company in Dong Nai Province recycled and treated 2,302 tons of dangerous waste from 61 production factories during the first six months of this year, according to investigations from Vietnam General Department of Environment, the Saigon Tiep Thi said Wednesday.
But the company did not report to the department or local authorities about storage of the waste before treatment or recycling, the department said, adding that the storage did not follow regulations.

Investigations found that the waste had been transported from the factories to three storage areas which belong to the General Department of Technology at the Ministry of National Defense.

A lot of waste from textiles, dyes, shoe-making materials and chemical factories were not stored safely, authorities found.

The company also sold 24 oil drums of waste diesel to a unit which was not authorized to treat such waste. The company also agreed to recycle 16 kinds of dangerous waste for which it was not authorized.
Inspectors from the department proposed that Prime Minister withdraw the company’s license on Tuesday. They asked that waste at its facilities be transported to other authorized recyclers.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, which controls the department, will look further into the company’s violations to impose penalties.
