Ba Be Lake has become a new Ramsar Site in Vietnam

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), UNESCO has recognized Ba Be Lake in the northern mountainous province of Bac Can as the Ramsar Site - the third wetland of international importance in Vietnam.
This Ramsar Site should be strictly protected similar to the two recognized national Ramsar sites, including Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh Province and Bau Sau in Dong Nai Province.

Ba Be Lake covers an area of about 500ha and is situated at 178m above sea level. With an average depth of 17-23m, the highest depth up to 29m, Ba Be is the only natural lake of special importance to be found in a mountainous area in Vietnam .

Ba Be Lake is also a unique protected area in Vietnam’s special use forest system with divers freshwater habitats and populations of some species greatly important in maintaining biodiversity. Besides, this protected area is also the only place in Vietnam to have Trachypithecus francoisi recognized as a primate species with narrow distribution.
The recognition of Ba Be Lake as a Ramsar site marks Vietnam’s new progress in implementation of the Ramsar Convention as well as the country’s efforts to preserve biodiversity.
Located in Ba Be National Park with 21 beautiful, interesting tourism sites such as Doi Cave, Puong, Na Phoong, Tham Kit caverns, etc., Ba Be Lake is an important ecological and cultural tourism zone in the northeast mountainous tourism area.
