14 January 2025 | 08:43:00 AM

Perched over 1,000 meters above sea level, Thang Hen Lake in Cao Bang Province is a stunning natural treasure surrounded by limestone mountain ranges. Its emerald green water and tranquil beauty draw visitors all year round, offering a picturesque escape into nature.

Nestled within the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark in Quoc Toan Commune, Tra Linh District, Thang Hen Lake lies approximately 20 kilometers from Cao Bang City. Its name, “Thang Hen,” meaning “bee’s tail” in the Tay ethnic language, reflects the lake’s unique shape when viewed from above.

The lake is part of a network of 36 smaller lakes, separated by distinct natural banks but interconnected by underground caves in the surrounding limestone mountains. During heavy rains, the water rises and spills into nearby valleys, forming lush green pools that enhance the area’s enchanting scenery.

Thang Hen Lake is renowned not only for its serene beauty but also for its vibrant ecosystem. Dense forests of ancient trees grow on the surrounding limestone mountains, providing a thriving habitat for diverse wildlife.

Throughout the year, the lake’s water maintains a mesmerizing emerald hue, mirroring the mountains and sky like a giant natural mirror. This clarity remains constant, making Thang Hen Lake a captivating destination in all seasons. A rare natural phenomenon occurs between September and October when the lake’s water level drops dramatically before refilling within hours, a spectacle that fascinates visitors.

Each season paints a unique picture of Thang Hen Lake. Spring surrounds the lake with blooming flowers, while summer rains swell its water, creating an expansive vista. Autumn draws visitors eager to see the golden rice fields, while early winter brings a quiet charm as trees shed their leaves. In deep winter, the water levels recede, and the area becomes a peaceful retreat, free of crowds.
