Wave of indignation raised against the monkey killer

20 July 2012 | 11:23:00 AM

VietNamNet Bridge – A young man has killed two monkeys and then showed off his “achievement” on Facebook. However, his savage action has been violently criticized, while he has been described as “emotionless cold-blooded person.”

Photos show cruel killing of endangered monkeys

The image showing a young man with a delighted face torturing a monkey has appeared at the top of the Facebook page of a person with nick name Quang Nguyen Van. It has caused shocks to many people has become the hot topic on all online forums.

There was also a photo album which showed what the man did with the monkeys. If clicking the album, one would see more photos which make his hair stand on end

After catching the monkeys, Quang did not hurry to kill the monkey immediately. He tried to torture them when they were alive. One of the photos that Quang has posted on Facebook shows that Quang pressed a cigarette into the mouth of the monkey.

The profile shown on Facebook says Quang is from Ha Lam town of Thang Binh district in Quang Nam province. Quang finished high school in 2010, which gives a reason to people to believe that Quang is 20 years old.

Just several minutes after the photos appeared on Facebook, they have been forwarded to hundreds, and then thousands of people, who have expressed their anger about the savage action of the young man.

On voz forum, a member with nickname HuuRyu wrote: “This is a kind of rare animal. There are only some hundreds individuals existing. And now two more have died.”

Meanwhile, silv3rgun wrote that rare animal killer must be sent to jail, calling on government agencies to impose appropriate punishment on the man.

“He is so cruel” are the words repeated by the members of webtretho. Trangnon_pv, one of the members, has expressed his worry that the rare monkey species may get exhausted, if the monkey killers are not heavily punished. A lot of adults said they shed tears when seeing the pictures and they could not imagine before that humans could be so cruel.

Commenting on Yahoo News, Linhhan wrote: “The killer would be treated the way he treated the monkeys,” adding that she could not imagine that a person can make such hard hearted behaviors.

In the latest news, VTC has quoted Vuong Tien Manh, an expert from CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) office in Vietnam, as saying that the monkeys on the pictures are the individuals of Pygathrix, a species in the danger of extinction.

According to CITES, since July 10, 2006, only three offshoots of the species have been existing, namely Pygathrix nema, Pygathrix nigripes and Pygathrix cinerea.

Manh said it is very likely that the killed monkeys belong to Pygathrix cinerea. The animals have been discovered since early the 20th century. The animals have been existing only in Vietnam with about 200 individuals.

In Vietnam, the animals have been found in three provinces of Quang Nam, Kon Tum and Binh Dinh.

“This is the species which needs to be protected because the number of monkeys has been decreasing continuously since 1995 due to the deforestation.

Tran Viet Hung, Deputy Director of ENV (the Education for Nature – Vietnam) has also affirmed that this is a rare animal species named in the Vietnam’s Red Book, where it is listed in the 1B group, i.e. they are in the danger of extinction.
