"Tram Bau" Forest Stops Flying Sand to Protect a Village

08 December 2011 | 12:18:00 PM

In Thanh Binh Village, Quang Xuan Commune (Quang Trach District, Quang Binh Province) there is a "Tram bau" (Combretum quadrangulare Kurz) forest which makes up a vast green area of 100 hectares on a white sand field. Tram bau forest became a shield to stop flying sand from encroaching on the village for the past 460 years.

Tram bau forest in Thanh Binh Village is striking with greenness on white sand slopes. The forest of 4 kilometers in length lays across a number of sand hills from Thanh Binh to Xuan Kieu villages. Tram bau trees have grown vibrantly green and stably here for 460 passing years, since people came and started break fresh ground. The forest has been preserved and treasured by villagers, who believe that it brings a peaceful and meaningful life to them.
“The biggest benefit Tram bau forest has brought to us is that it stops flying sand to the village and the commune. Many other coastal places of Quang Binh Province have been affected by flying sand but thanks to this forest the sand has never been able to drive us from our village," said Mr. Dau Thanh Minh, the Head of Thanh Binh Village.
Like the entire village, the village's crop fields are located next to the Tram bau forest and feed up 2,020 people in 486 village's households. It seems that under white sand there is no water left but when you dig a few inches into the sand you can feel moisture. "The forest keeps water. The village's crop fields are next to the forest so that they have never suffered from drought. In a raining season the forest keep water in the sand and in dry season it provide the village with water." Mr. Minh said.

Villagers obey the village's laws on forest protection quite strictly and voluntarily. Whoever encroaches the forest would receive a public blame or financial fine. The village has a forest guard squad that works very effectively. Besides, all villagers have high awareness on forest protection, especially prevention of forest encroachment by outsiders. Thanks to this, people can enjoy a sight of great ancient Tram bau trees and of the vast green forest on the white sand.
