Three “scenarios” to avoid flooding in Hanoi

02 June 2011 | 11:51:00 AM

Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage One-Member State Co., Ltd has released three situations to drain water and combat flooding in the rainy season of this year.

Mr. Nguyen Le, Director of Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage One-Member State Co., Ltd, said in this year’s rainy season, Hanoi will have to face 20 flooding points that are listed in the Hanoi Drainage Project Phase II. The company has also forecasted 3 drainage situations and flooding prevention with each certain amount of rainfall.

Accordingly, with the average rainfall (below 50mm), on the main axis of the city, there will not be flooding points that only exist in some low-lying areas, unimproved drainage system or prolonged drainage time which leads to stagnant water on roads. At this level, the company will mobilize forces to monitor low-lying points that have no drainage systems or poor flowing ability of drainage system and will use motor vehicles to clear blocked points and water suction pumps to increase drainage time.

With the amount of rainfall from 50-100 mm, Yen So Pumping Station will then operate at maximum capacity, and, at the same time, the company will put portable pump set in low-lying areas such as Tong Dan, Pham Van Dong streets; operate regulation gates to exploit regulation lakes such as West Lake A, B, Dong Da, Thien Quang and Bay Mau lakes.
In the worst circumstances that the rainfall is over 100mm, in addition to the above solutions, the company will mobilize 100% of employees to clean water collection muzzles, remove flow obstructions, prevent Nhue River’s water overflow in the city. Especially, Mr. Le said that it is necessary to demolish block and directing dams on the drainage system.
In order to confront this year’s rainy season, the company has prepared 46 suction tank trucks and jets, 8 sink pumps, 5 generators, 10 mobile pumping sets and over 100 special-purpose vehicles. It has also demanded that there should be an overall drainage planning for Hanoi as well as specific infrastructure planning for each construction area.
On the progress of Hanoi Drainage Project Phase II, Mr. Le said some tender packages are being constructed such as improving drainage canals in To Lich, Hoang Liet, Lu, Set Rivers; improving Linh Dam and Dinh Cong lakes.
