The tree is 27 meters tall and its leaf canopy is 35 meters wide. Its roots and trunks look like two huge blocks of granite.
This is the third ancient tree in Nghe An recognized as the heritage tree of Vietnam. The two others are a 70m-tall fir tree (Cunminghamia lanceolata Lamb) in Pu Mat National Park and a 700-year-old Barringtonia tree on Ngu Island.
So far nearly 1,000 trees of 70 different plant species across the nation have been recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees since the program was launched in March 2010.
The program has spread widely and become a mass movement with an enthusiastic response from the community, stimulating the fine tradition of Vietnamese people planting trees and protecting forest land, as well as contributing to biodiversity conservation.
