San Miguel told to compensate locals for waste spill

07 August 2009 | 10:20:00 AM

San Miguel Pure Foods Vietnam has been ordered to pay the bill for damages caused to Ben Cat District after the rupture of its wastewater pond, a local official said Monday.

Tran Thi Kim Van, Vice Chairwoman of Binh Duong’s People’s Committee, said the company should work with local authorities to confirm the cost of the damage and fully compensate local people after repairing the walls of the pond.
The outflow of wastewater on July 25 turned nearly two hectares of rubber and bamboo yellow and destroyed nearly a hectare of fish and frog farming ponds, according to the district’s Bureau of Natural Resources and Environment.
A company representative said San Miguel is buying a wastewater treatment system worth over US$4 million which is scheduled for operation in March next year.
