(VACNE) – On December 27, 2025, in Hai Phong city, the Hai Phong City Environmental Protection Association, in collaboration with the Hai Phong Ornamental Biology Association and the Hai Phong Center for Han Nom Practice and Folk Culture, organized a scientific seminar on the topic "The Values of Vietnam's Heritage Trees in Hai Phong in Community Life."
The seminar carries profound scientific and humanitarian significance, contributing to the dissemination of the city's policies and guidelines in raising community awareness about preserving, restoring, and protecting trees, ancient trees, and Vietnam Heritage Trees along the village roads and streets of Hai Phong. This is not merely an activity to protect nature, but also a way to preserve the cultural essence of a port city with a strong identity, blessed by nature with green spaces stretching from the mainland to the sea, where rich geosystem, geo-cultural, and historical values converge, playing a fundamental role in the process of sustainable development.
The seminar received 18 presentations from scientists at both central and local levels, along with representatives from many professional associations in the city, such as the Gardening Association, the Folk Arts Association, the Ornamental Species Association, the Urban Planning and Development Association, the Tourism Association, the Traditional Medicine Association, and the Antiquities Association. The presentations focused on clarifying many important aspects, from the care and conservation of Vietnam's Heritage Trees; the beauty and aesthetic value of heritage trees in the ecosystem; the role of heritage trees in urban and rural landscape architecture; their value in promoting tourism; the connection between heritage trees and local historical-cultural traditions and spiritual life; to the unique medicinal values that many heritage trees provide.
In his welcome speech at the Workshop, Professor, Doctor of Science Đặng Huy Huỳnh – ASEAN Biodiversity Hero, Vice President of the Vietnam Association for Nature and Environment Protection, and Chairman of the Vietnam Heritage Tree Council, emphasized that in daily life, green trees and Vietnam's Heritage Trees are not only biological entities but also spiritual spaces for the community. Heritage trees play an important role in responding to and mitigating the impacts of climate change; their canopies provide shade, regulate the microclimate, slow down water flow during heavy rains, and reduce erosion; the trunk acts as a wind barrier, and the roots hold the soil and nurture groundwater sources. At the same time, heritage trees are also places that preserve and spread the beautiful traditional cultural values of the Vietnamese people across the country. This is also a practical and responsible response to the city's leadership initiatives, reflecting the people's aspiration for a Hai Phong that is always green, cool, and modern, alongside civilized rural areas that are bright – green – clean – beautiful.

Prof. Dr. Dang Huy Huynh gives a welcome speech at the workshop
In his opening speech at the seminar, Mr. Bùi Quang Sản, Chairman of the Hai Phong City Environmental Protection Association, stated that with nearly 15 years of implementing activities to honor Vietnam's Heritage Trees, the Association has created a wide-reaching impact in the community life of the city. To date, Hai Phong has 310 trees of 23 rare species recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees. In the coming time, this activity will continue to be maintained and developed both in depth and breadth, especially in the western area of Hai Phong (formerly Hai Duong), where there is a hilly terrain such as in Chí Linh and Kinh Môn – regions that preserve many ancient, rare trees of special value.

Mr. Bùi Quang Sản, Chairman of the Hai Phong City Environmental Protection Association, delivered the opening speech at the workshop
More than 60 delegates attended the seminar, and many expressed the unanimous view that each Vietnamese Heritage Tree being honored inherently carries significant values in terms of biodiversity, precious plant genetic resources of Vietnam, historical-cultural significance, landscape, spirituality, and tourism. The delegates proposed that similar scientific seminars should continue to be organized to maintain, strengthen, and further enhance the effectiveness of the conservation and development of Vietnamese Heritage Trees in Hai Phong city in the coming time.
