PM okays 51 key waste water plants

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the construction of 51 key waste water treatment plants in Dong Nai river basin with the aim of reducing pollution in local waterways.


Under the plan, facilities will be built in HCM City and other localities in the basin area with a combined treatment capacity of 2.5 million cubic metres per day by 2020.

The projects are part of a master plan to develop drainage systems and waste water treatment systems in residential areas and industrial zones in the Dong Nai river basin for the next 16 years. Five of the plants have already been built.

Under the plan, facilities will be built in HCM City and other localities in the basin area with a combined treatment capacity of 2.5 million cubic metres per day by 2020.

Total capacity will be increased to 4.2 million cubic metres per day by 2030.

According to the zoning plan, 11 waste water treatment facilities will be built in HCM City, nine in Dong Nai, six in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, five in each of Long An, Tay Ninh and Binh Thuan provinces, four in Lam Dong and one in Binh Duong Province.

In addition, drainage system projects will be built in other localities in line with local zoning plans in these localities.

Waste water from industrial parks and craft villages will be collected and treated before being discharged into the river.

More than VND99 trillion ($4.65 billion) will be needed for construction of drainage systems and waste water treatment facilities by 2020 and over VND69 trillion ($3.24 billion) in 2020 -2030 period, which will be funded by the State budget, official development assistance loans and other sources.

Priority will be given to construction of waste water treatment facilities in HCM City, Dong Nai and Binh Duong.

Dong Nai River basin covers about 47,000 square kilometers in HCM City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Long An, Tay Ninh, Lam Dong, Dak Nong, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Dak Lak.
