05 December 2016 | 10:59:00 AM

Authorities in Thanh Hoa Province has just given the go-ahead for Nghi Son Refinery to discharge waste water into the sea for six months to clean their pipes.

Nghi Son Oil Refinery

Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemicals LLC has been given permits to discharge a total of 241,428 cubic metres of waste water into the sea by Hai Yen Commune after cleaning the pipes and hydrostatic tests. No chemicals will be used during the process.

The waste water from the demineralisation process while part of the refinery is under construction will also be discharged into the sea.

The refinery will be allowed to discharge 2,250 cubic metres a day for six months.

The provincial people's committee asked Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemicals LLC to test the waste water. The company is only allowed to discharge the water after proving that samples are safe. Thanh Hoa Department of Natural Resources and Environment will re-check the results.

The company must stop discharges and take responsibility if the water later fails to meet standards.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment, management board of Nghi Son Industrial Zone and Tinh Gia District authorities will supervise the process.
