The Animals Asia Foundation (AAF) announced the opening of four new bear enclosures in the northern province of Vinh Phuc on November 5.
The newly-opened bear enclosures in Vinh Phuc Province.
The enclosures, in Tam Dao National Park, are among the key parts of the second phase of the Tam Dao Bear Rescue Centre's project to meet international standards, which cost VND18 billion. The project was wholly funded by AAF. Covering a total area of 12,000 square metres, the enclosures can house 80 bears.
The project operators hope that the new facilities will increase the operational capacity of the Tam Dao Bear Rescue Centre, put into operation in 2006.
According to Animals Asia, there are officially 1,978 bears still in bile farms in the country, despite the practice having been banned in 1992 for its cruelty to the animals.
