Germany supports climate change initiative in Vietnam
18 June 2014 | 11:23:00 AM
On June 10, Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) and the Germany Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), officially launched a project supporting the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in Vietnam.
The project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
The overall aim of the project is to strengthen state management in response to climate change through coordination and consultation, develop and implement the NAMAs including measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) and attract domestic and international funding..
The project is expected to contribute directly to climate protection, more efficient resource utilisation and technological progress, thus strengthening Vietnam’s competitiveness. The project’s outcomes will primarily benefit climate change actors, state agencies, sectors and locals involved in NAMAs. The project will also help realise the government’s GHG emission reduction targets under the National Green Growth Strategy.
The best practices and lessons learnt from this project are expected to benefit other local NAMAs projects and other countries through regional and global dialogues and peer-to-peer learning management systems.
This project is implemented by GIZ and the Vietnam Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment (IMHEN) under MONRE. It will run from 2014-2018 with a budget of up to EUR 4 million.
