Farmers dump dead fish to protest factory waste dumping

08 September 2015 | 02:14:00 PM

Farmers in Vung Tau City have dump thousands of dead fish outside local factories they maintain killed them by discharging untreated waste.

Fish die-off in Long Son Commune

The farmers said their fish stopped feeding, became lethargic and on September 5 died, apparently due to a lack of oxygen in the water.

Duong Van Hung, a farmer in Long Son Commune, said he lost thousands of his fish worth VND1bn. Dozens of other farmers suffered similar losses.

Fish have been dying in Long Son Commune and near Cha Va Bridge for some time. The farmers said that various seafood processing factories located in Tan Hai Commune dump untreated waste into the environment.

The farmers dumped the dead fish on September 6 in front of the factories.

Le Xuan Tu, chairman of Long Son Commune, said officials were trying to persuade the farmers not to repeat their action and promised to find ways to deal with the problem and damage.
