This year, Vietnam will join the Earth Hour cause in switching off its lights for one hour.
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their non-essential lights and electrical items. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote to act against climate change.
Hanoi, Vietnam will be joining in the Earth Hour cause this year. Over 35 businesses and organisations have pledged to turn off their non-essential lights for this historical event, including the Sofitel Plaza and Metropole, Microsoft, Humanitarian services for Children of Vietnam, Green Mango, Standard Chartered bank, ANZ, the Hilton, HSBC, Toyota, Vietnam Airlines, the Danish and Australian Embassies and Le Pub.
WWF Vietnam is organising a special event in front of the Hanoi Opera House.
Festivities will begin at 8pm, with lights out from 8.30-9:30 PM for Earth Hour and entertainment till 10pm.
Tell your friends, colleagues and families about Earth Hour, and join us for this exciting event at the Opera House. If you cannot attend, remember to switch of your lights and electricity on March 28th at 8.30pm and join one billion other people against climate change.
