Cold surge to bring sharp temperature drop to northern Vietnam

09 December 2025 | 08:20:00 AM

Northern Vietnam is set to face a strong cold surge, with temperatures in Hanoi forecast to fall to around 10 degrees Celsius and many northern highland areas dropping below 9 degrees Celsius.

A strong cold front is expected to sweep into the region on December 11, according to the National Centre for Hydro Meteorological Forecasting, bringing scattered showers.

From the night of December 12 to 13, the north is likely to see showers and isolated thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing heavy rain. Nights and early mornings will be cold.

From December 13, the cold will intensify, with Hanoi’s lowest temperature falling to around 10 degrees Celsius and several high mountain areas dipping below 9 degrees Celsius.

AccuWeather forecasts that Hanoi will maintain temperatures of 15 to 26 degrees Celsius in the first three days of next week before dropping sharply to around 12 to 20 degrees Celsius at the weekend.

In high altitude locations such as Sapa in Lao Cai, temperatures next week will range from 8 to 19 degrees Celsius, then fall to 5 to 11 degrees Celsius late in the week.

In central Vietnam, the first two days of next week will be mostly cloudy, with some areas seeing showers and thunderstorms.

A tropical depression is also forecast to enter the East Sea today.

The National Centre for Hydro Meteorological Forecasting reports that by 7 pm on December 8, the tropical depression will be located in the southeastern waters of the central East Sea with winds at level 6 and gusts at level 8.

By the evening of December 9, it is expected to be around 150km south of Song Tu Tay Island, maintaining winds at level 6 and gusts at level 8.

Over the following 48 to 72 hours, it will continue moving west southwest at 20 to 25km per hour and gradually weaken into a low pressure area.

From early December 8, the southeastern waters of the central East Sea will see winds at level 6 with gusts at level 8, waves of 2 to 4 metres and rough seas. Vessels may face thunderstorms, whirlwinds, strong winds and high waves.
