Camphor tree (Cinamomum camphora) in Bac Giang

26 January 2011 | 03:41:00 PM

This ancient tree, more than 1,000 years old, grows in Tien Luc Commune, Lang Giang District, Bac Giang Province. It was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a state treasure on Jan 21st, 1989. It's one of the two most ancient camphor trees in the world, a rare "wonder" of nature.

To put the enormous size of the tree into perspective, it takes eight adults, holding hands in a wide embrace, to stand around the base of the tree. The perimeter of the trunk, at its largest point, is 11 m and 8.3 m at its smallest. According to historical documents, this tree has been given the title of the "Biggest camphor tree in the Kingdom" by the King Le Canh Hung (1740 - 1786) and categorized as one of the rarest and most precious ancient tree in Vietnam by the Vietnam Historical Museum.

There are many legends about this camphor tree, which is regarded as a sacred tree by the local community. According to the local people of the commune, the scent from the camphor tree contributes to the low rate of infectious diseases in the community and the good health of the local people. At present, the camphor tree is well taken care of and conserved by the local authorities, which is in their best interest as it continues to be an attractive tourism spot in Bac Giang.
