A three-year project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has improved the management of water resources in Hanoi and the northern provinces of Hoa Binh, Ha Nam, Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh, a conference was told.

The workshop to review the project on managing the quality of water in the Day River Basin took place in Hanoi Tuesday.

The project is to address the most serious of the environmental pollution, which badly affects local residents in the area.

It is part of a project to manage the Red River Basin which has received loans of US$70 million from the ADB.
Dave Hebbethwaite, the project’s chief advisor said that the project has trained employees to conduct surveys and analyze the quality of the water, manage water resources in general, raise the public’s awareness on water quality and draw up regulations and guidelines for licensing the discharge of waste water.

Nguyen Thai Lai, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, said that the project’s outcomes will be shared with other water projects, especially the licensing of waste water discharges, which will be applied nationwide.
