o Lich River has been seriously polluted by wastewater

The water from West Lake after being treated will be poured into To Lich River through two discharge gates.

At a recent meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Japanese experts have promised the Vietnamese government their bio-nanotechnology which could quickly reduce pollution in Hanoi’s To Lich River.

Dr Tadashi Yamamura, a UN environmental specialist, chairman of Japan's Trade-Environment Promotion Organisation and head of the delegation, offered to provide Vietnam bio-nanotechnology equipment for free to tackle pollution affecting To Lich River and part of West Lake.

The equipment with an aerator to nanotechnology to quickly treat water using natural materials will be installed on the bed of the river. This can help the river's odour reduce considerably within three days.

To Lich River runs along 14 kilometres through some districts of Ba Dinh, Cau Giay, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai and Thanh Tri. It has been severely polluted for many years.

Hanoi has sought solutions for cleaning up the To Lich River and West Lake. In 2016, the city started work on the Yen Xa wastewater treatment plant project, worth USD800 million, in an attempt to clean up the To Lich, Lu and Set rivers and create a greener landscape for these areas. However, the project has not yet been completed
