HCM City to host recycling event

09 April 2012 | 04:21:00 PM

VietNamNet Bridge – The fifth annual Waste Recycling Day will be held on April 15 at the Labour Cultural House in District 1 to raise awareness of the three Rs – reducing, reusing and recycling waste.

Organised by the HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the event also encourages the public to use environmentally friendly packages and sort waste to help recyclers.

The event will include exchange of waste for gifts, an exhibition of products made from recycled materials, and a fashion show using waste materials and contests.

In addition, the department will set up more than 100 sites around the city to collect harmful garbage, including used batteries, lamps, chemical containers and recyclable waste.

The Big C supermarket, which is joining the event, has urged customers to bring used batteries to its outlets on April 21 and take part in environmental protection puzzles to win attractive gifts.

Last month, the department launched the campaign named A Month without Plastic Bags to encourage consumers to shift to bio-bags.

Under the programme, environmentally friendly bags will be used at supermarkets in HCM City, including Big C, Co.opmart and Lotte Mart supermarkets, on every Thursday this month.

The campaign is part of the programme to reduce the use of plastic bags in the city during the 2012-15 period, and is in response to the fifth annual Waste Recycling Day.

Viet Nam has set a target to reduce the use of plastic bags at supermarkets and shopping malls by 40 per cent by 2015 compared to 2010, as part of its national strategy on solid waste management.
