Dr. Luu Hong Truong, Vice President of SIE said that SIE scientists found a new unknown genus while looking for sites to implement project “Establishment of 25-hectare fields for ecological succession study at Bidoup National Park , Nui Ba” in early 2012.
The new genus was sent to Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (Scotland, United Kingdom) for molecular analysis. The result was that the newly found genus was different from other genus on record and had been unknown until now. The new genus’s scientific name was Billolivia D.J.Middleton, gen.nov.
Researchers from SIE named the newly found genus after the location where it was found, Giang Ly ecological zone which is located at an altitude of 1,700 meters in Bidoup Nui Ba National Park (Lam Dong).
In addition, Dr. Truong and his co-workers confirmed the existence of at least other five species of Giang Ly genus – Billolivia. These five species were new discovery to science. Among all, four were found at Da Lat highlands, the remaining were found at Bu Gia Map National Park (Binh Phuoc).
