Using thermal treatment, the detoxification project aims to rid the airport of all remaining traces of dioxin. A yard has been built to store an approximate 3,200 cubic metres of contaminated soil, which need to dry before the next step of treatment. All the water leaked from the soil will be collected and treated before disposal.
Joakim Parker, Director of USAID in Viet Nam, said he was pleased that the project was on schedule and was happy with the effective cooperation of the Vietnamese Government's agencies, especially the Ministry of Defence.
The project is expected to be finished by 2016.
USAID plans to work closely with Da Nang authorities to ensure that people are informed about the project, according to Parker.
USAID hopes the Da Nang project will help Viet Nam develop the capacity to implement similar activities in other regions.
