The Ministry of Defence sent helicopters to the central region to rescue and help victims.

On October 17, floods raged in all parts of Ha Tinh province, with the rainfall reaching more than 800 millimeters in Ha Tinh city and Hoa Duyet District. The flood has left seven people dead, three missing, hundreds of isolated villages, and more than 83,500 households inundated.

As flood came unexpectedly and very quickly, many people couldn’t run away. They had to sit on their roofs and wave for help. Ha Tinh province authorities have sent helicopters to supply food to residents in the Huong Khe District.

In Nghe An province, heavy rains with the rainfall of 700-800 millimeters submerged five districts, and isolated nine communes. The province has reported eight deaths and 15,000 inundated houses.

Quang Binh province has reported four deaths and one missing person, with over 53,000 submerged houses.

Nguyen Van Binh, deputy director of the Hanoi Passenger Railway Company, said around 3,000 passengers in 12 trains were stranded at the stations in Vinh City and Dong Hoi town.

Earlier, on October 16, flood waters completely shut down operations of the North-South railway from Vinh to Dong Hoi.

Railway authorities have sent 60 buses to carry passengers from Vinh to Dong Hoi and the other way round. But some buses had to stop as several sections of the National Highway 1A were deeply flooded.

At 4am, October 18, a coach was swept away by flood in Ha Tinh province. By 11am this morning, 19 passengers were rescued but at least 20 were in missing, including four women and five children.

While the central region is struggling with serious flood, mega-typhoon Megi is approaching the East Sea and may hit the region in the next few days.
