In early 2013, Education for Nature – Vietnam (ENV) will host Vietnam’s first annual awards ceremony recognizing the outstanding achievement and contribution by members of society in the protection of wildlife. The award event will be carried out in partnership with the Freeland Foundation, Pan Nature, Traffic Indochina, IUCN Vietnam, Cuc Phuong Endangered Primate Rescue Center, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the United States Embassy.
“This event is about recognizing people who stand out as having a strong positive impact in protecting wildlife, threatened by hunting and trade,” says Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung of ENV. “ENV and our partners feel that it is important that the excellent contributions of law enforcement, the media, and the public in the protection of wildlife do not go unnoticed.”
Amongst those recognized for their achievements will be representatives from key government agencies with responsibilities to enforce wildlife protection laws, as well as an outstanding journalist and member of the public.
Award Categories:
1. Outstanding Enforcement Officer Award: Up to five awards will be given to professionals directly involved in the enforcement of wildlife protection. Suggested nominees may include Environmental Police officers, Forest Rangers from provincial and protected area enforcement teams, Customs officers, border police, Fisheries officers, and other members of the law enforcement community with a proven track record in protecting wildlife
2. Excellence in Journalism Award: One award will be given to a journalist who through his or her work has had an impact on strengthening the protection of wildlife.
3. Outstanding Public Contribution Award: One award will be given to a member of the public who has contributed through his or her work over many years to the protection of wildlife

The nomination process will begin on August 10, 2012.

Outstanding Achievement Awards for Wildlife Protection

Nomination deadline: The deadline for nominations is 31st October 2012 after which no new nominations will be accepted.
Announcement of awards: An award ceremony will be hosted in Hanoi in early 2013. Award winners will be notified by ENV in mid December 2012. The exact date and location of the award ceremony will also be announced in late November.
Nomination review process
Selection will be based on the highest standards of performance excellence. The winning candidates will be selected competitively based on the following process:
· Initial screening
ENV and representatives of the panel of judges will conduct a review of all nominations and produce a short-list comprised of candidates who meet the required criteria
· Review by judges panel
A panel of judges will review short-listed nominations and associated materials and select winners based on a majority vote for each category.

Award winners
The award winners will be notified by phone and written announcement in late November 2012. They will be formally invited to the award ceremony which will take place in early 2013 in Hanoi. Award winners will be required to work closely with ENV to collect photos or video footage and other supplementing materials to help prepare for the award ceremony.

Nomination Criteria
General conditions
Must be a Vietnamese national and reside in Vietnam.
Notes
For the purpose of these awards, wildlife protection is defined as efforts directly relating to stopping illegal hunting and trade of wildlife.
Category 1: Outstanding Enforcement Officer Award
Applicable: Police officer, Forest Ranger, Fisheries Officer, Customs Officer, other law enforcement.
Through his/her work, the candidate has greatly contributed to efforts to combat wildlife crime in one or more of the following ways:
· Protect wildlife in its habitat: The candidate has played an active role in the protection of wildlife within its habitat.
· Investigation: The candidate has led or played an active role in an in-depth investigation focusing on major criminal aspects of the wildlife trade (police only).
· Enforcement: The candidate has demonstrated excellence in his/her work, and commitment within their agency to combat illegal wildlife trade. Such commitment includes making arrests, interdicting smuggling and trade operations, efforts to address consumer demand, monitoring and management of wildlife farms, preventing transnational wildlife crime, etc.
Category 2: Outstanding Journalist Award
Applicable: Vietnamese language television, radio, print, or online journalists.
Published/aired one or more outstanding pieces on a wildlife protection issue(s) that has greatly contributed to combatting the illegal trade of wildlife in one or more of the following ways:
· Outstanding journalism: The candidate produced one or more quality, in-depth pieces on a wildlife protection issue of importance and significantly contributed to raising public awareness and knowledge of the issue.
· Exposé journalism: The candidate’s coverage on a specific aspect of wildlife protection was instrumental in exposing a critical issue and ultimately contributed to subsequent decisions or enforcement action by authorities to address the issue.
· Commitment through journalism: The candidate consistently and regularly reports on wildlife protection issues of substance, resulting in increased public awareness.
Category 3: Outstanding Public Contribution Award
Applicable: Vietnamese citizens who have dedicated 5 or more years to the protection of wildlife, without already having direct links to government or the NGO community.
The candidate has dedicated five or more years of service to helping protect wildlife with direct implications on reducing hunting or trade of at least one key wildlife species.

The National Wildlife Protection Award is to mobilize and motivate active participation by a range of individuals in wildlife protection efforts. The most active individuals are recognized and awarded for their positive contribution to stopping illegal wildlife trade.
