Climate change is one of the most serious challenges in the world and has become Vietnam’s vital issue in the 21st century. According to the latest scenario on climate change for Vietnam, by 2100, the average temperature is likely to increase by 2-3 degree Celsius, while the sea level might rise over 1 meter. Extreme climate phenomena such as hurricanes, tropical low pressures, heavy rains causing floods, drought, scorching sun, extremely cold, etc. will happen more complicated, frequently and harshly. Most deltas and coastal areas could be flooded.
After issuing the National Target Program, a series of plans, projects and active participation with international treaties and actions, the Government intend to build a National Strategy as a basis, orientation and linkage of all activities to respond and adapt actively to climate change.
At the meeting on April 8 in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has given some orientation ideas to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, other relevant ministries and sectors for the building of the strategy .
Accordingly, the strategy needs a careful research and study of other strategies on climate change in the countries with the same conditions as Vietnam as well as in developed countries in the region and over the world. Furthermore, the strategy should be consistent with long-term cooperation policy on climate change under the latest international treaties and agreements and synchronized with relevant strategies and plans issued by the Government.
As expected, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will be in charge of building and completing the strategy to submit to the Government for revising and promulgating it in the coming time.
