On March 28, Mr. Dang Dinh Nguyen, Director of Management Board of the Saola Protected Area in Quang Nam, said WWF has decided to finance 1.796 million Euros to protect Saola population in Truong Son area under the Quang Nam Province.
The protected area covers 16,500 hectares in Tay Giang and Dong Giang mountainous districts (adjacent to Thua Thien-Hue Province). The project will be implemented within four years (2011-2014), mainly for improving conservation capability for Saola Protected Area and for forest corridor and biodiversity recovery in Quang Nam province.
Saola (pseudoryx nghetinhensis) is a special rare wild animal, listed in the world red book and only exists in mountainous areas of Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam provinces with nearly 200 individuals.
In addition, in Quang Nam, there remain two rare forest elephant flocks besides Saola. However, protecting these elephants has not been paid attention to properly. Over the last 7 years, four elephants have been killed.
