The GreenID Organisation recently raised warnings about the air quality in Hanoi and said that Hanoi has become the second most air-polluted city in South East Asia.

During a press conference on April 2, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan said statistics from the monitoring stations on Nguyen Van Cu Street and the US Embassy in Hanoi show that the amount of dust had exceeded the permitted level.

This means Hanoi is having localised pollution due to traffic density and on-going constructions. Areas that have factories and burning dumping sites also face pollution.

However, Nhan didn't agree with the assessment that Hanoi is the second most air-polluted city in South East Asia.

"There's no basis for such assessment. It is not accurate because the GreenID report only includes 20 cities in four countries instead of collecting data from all 11 South East Asian countries," he said. "Hanoi does have air pollution and we need solutions to deal with the problem but we shouldn't believe in inaccurate information."

He emphasised that Hanoi only had localised pollution. In order to monitor the whole city, they need 18 monitoring stations but only 10 have been put into operation.

The government has applied some measures such as relocating polluting establishments and issued emission standards for cars.
