Cold weather expected to arrive earlier than usual this year

18 August 2025 | 07:02:00 AM

Cold spells are forecast to come earlier than the long-term average, starting from October and strengthening in November, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

In September and October, rainfall in the northeast and from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai is predicted to be 10 to 30 per cent above the long-term average. The northwest may see 5 to 10 per cent less rain in October, while other regions will stay near average.

In November, rainfall from Nghe An to Lam Dong is expected to rise 10 to 25 per cent above average, with most other regions remaining near normal. Severe and extreme cold spells are forecast to be close to the long-term average.

From September to November, storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea are projected to exceed the long-term average. Heavy rain and storms will peak in late 2025, especially in areas from Thanh Hoa to Hue and the south-central coast in October and November.

Between December and February 2026, cold spells are likely to become stronger and more frequent, while severe cold remains near the long-term average.
