Dung Quat refinery gets nod to resume operation

19 October 2009 | 02:59:00 AM

The State Inspection Committee Tuesday allowed PetroVietnam, investor of the Dung Quat oil refinery, to reopen the plant Wednesday after a broken valve leading to a six-week shutdown was fixed.

The committee said it had checked the repairs conducted by contractor Technip SA on the broken valve at the refinery’s fluid catalytic cracker and found that it met technical specifications.

The cracker, which makes gasoline and other products, broke down on August 18.
The 148,000 barrel-a-day refinery in the central province of Quang Ngai, which started commercial operations in February, aims to meet a third of Vietnam’s fuel demand by next year. The nation currently imports almost all of its oil products.
Construction of Vietnam’s second refinery, the 200,000-barrel-per-day Nghi Son plant in the northern province of Thanh Hoa, will start in June next year, a PetroVietnam official said earlier this month.
