“Nghien” tree (Burretiodendron hsienmu) in Coc Bo (Cao Bang) to be honored as Vietnam Heritage Tree

On May 16, 2011, a large number of officials, soldiers and people from ethnic minorities gathered near Coc Bo Cave (Pac Bo- Cao Bang Historical Protection Zone) to attend the ceremony to recognize the ancient “Nghien” tree as Vietnam Heritage Tree held by VACNE in collaboration with Cao Bang Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment and Ha Quang District People’s Committee.
Participating in the ceremony were Prof. Acad. Dang Vu Minh, Chairman of National Assembly’s Committee for Science, Technology and Environment cum Chairman of Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations; Prof. Chu Tuan Nha, Former Minister of Science, Technology & Environment; Dr. Nong Van Pao, Vice Chairman of Cao Bang Province People’s Committee; Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Sinh, President of Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment and Mr. Hoang Duong Tung, Deputy Director General of Vietnam Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE).
Besides, the ceremony to grant Certificate and set up stele of the Vietnam Heritage Tree has drawn the participation of numerous leaders of VACNE, Cao Bang province, districts and representatives of press agencies, local mass organizations and environmental activists in Vietnam.
Introducing about this Nghien tree, Mr. Dinh Ngoc Hai, President of Cao Bang Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, said it is more than 500 years old, over 2 meters in diameter and 40 meters high. Additionally, the tree is also a historical witness in a national protected area. Around the tree there seems to be still footprints of Uncle Ho and revolutionary predecessors while living and working here in the period of 1946-1954 and in the subsequent years. Especially, Uncle Ho used to come to visit Mr. Duong Van Dinh’s house - a close friend of Uncle Ho in the area with the ancient Nghien tree in order to talk to people from ethnic minorities about Viet Minh’s policy of great national solidarity.
