Construction of a waste-to-energy plant in Cu Chi District, HCM City, started this morning, March 5.

The solid waste treatment project, invested in by Vietstar Joint Stock Company, has a total investment of VND3.5 trillion (USD137.25 million) and a designed capacity of 2,000 tonnes of waste per day. The plant features an integrated system for compost production and waste-to-energy incineration using German technology.

The project, which is scheduled to be completed within 17 months, aims to process 100 percent of its waste through waste-to-energy incineration and recycling.

Nguyen Toan Thang, Director of the HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment, affirmed that the department will create the most favourable conditions for investors to undertake waste treatment projects.

Once operational, the project will enable HCM City to process 45-50 percent of its household waste with advanced technology, reducing emissions and recovering energy for production and daily use.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Bui Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee, acknowledged that the city is struggling with significant environmental challenges, particularly urban waste management.

Around 10,000 tonnes of household waste are discharged into the environment daily in HCM City.
